Government sounds 'alert' on illicit import of crackers

New Delhi, Oct 11 The Customs department has been asked to keep a hawk-eyed vigil on the illegal import of firecrackers from abroad, especially from China, authorities said.

The Central Board of Excise and Customs' (CBEC) late request to head of traditions zones the nation over comes in front of Diwali on October 19.

The import of firecrackers is limited and requires an import license from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.

"Further, till date, no permit to import firecrackers has been allowed for ownership and/or deal under the Explosives Rules, 2008, by Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization," said the order, issued by the counter carrying unit of the CBEC on September 27.

It refered to a Supreme Court mandate a month ago requesting that the Center guarantee strict consistence of a 1992 government notice with respect to the restriction on the import of firecrackers.

The notice was issued by the Department of Industrial Development (now Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion) on January 27, 1992.

On October 9, the apex court banned the offer of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR district till November 1.

There have been endeavors from over the outskirt to carry modest and hazardous firecrackers, particularly of Chinese-starting point, into India in front of Diwali, a DRI official said.

These illegally-imported firecrackers are regularly covered as toys or imported illegally by disguising them in different products being brought into the nation from abroad, he said.

Outside settlements in the event of import of Chinese firecrackers are by and large made through hawala channels and such products are sold wrongfully in India, the authority guaranteed.

Chinese-starting point firecrackers are known to contain sulfur and different perilous substances, affecting on the earth and on the general soundness of people in general, he said.

The DRI, the lead office to check sneaking and traditions obligation cheats, had in January this year seized China-made firecrackers worth Rs 10 crore.

They were foreign made wrongfully by a Punjab-based shipper, the DRI official said.
