Ghatkopar building breakdown: toll 17; Shiv Sena laborer arrested

Mumbai, Jul 26 A Shiv Sena worker was today arrested in connection with the building collapse in suburban Ghatkopar which left 17 people dead.

As per residents of the Siddhi-Sai Cooperative Housing Society, the pillars of the building got debilitated because of redesign work of a nursing home on the ground floor possessed by Shiv Sena laborer Sunil Shitap, prompting the fall yesterday.

Shitap has been reserved under IPC areas 304 (II) (blamable manslaughter not adding up to kill), 336 (act imperiling life or individual wellbeing of others) and 338 (causing intolerable hurt by act endangering life or personal security of others).

Shitap, who was kept the previous evening, was captured subsequent to scrutinizing, a senior police official said.

The death toll, in the interim, today rose to 17 after five more bodies were hauled out from the rubble of the four-story working amid overnight pursuit and safeguard operations.

"Our rescue team alongside the fire brigade and NDRF jawans removed 28 people from the trash, out which 17 people have been declared dead. Eleven harmed have been conceded in the close-by Shantiniketan and Rajawadi hospitals," an authority of the disaster management unit of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

Five bodies were pulled out amid the night. Two fire fighters were harmed in the protect operation and moved to a healing center, the authority said.

The hunt and rescue operations are as yet in progress.
