US media: Mexican leader's visit with Trump racked over wall

Washington, Feb 25 (AFP) Mexico and the US have shelved provisional plans for a visit to Washington by President Enrique Pena Nieto as pressures hold on finished a proposed border divider, US media has announced.

Pena Nieto had just wiped out a visit in January a year ago on account of US President Donald Trump's request that Mexico pay for the wall, which he needs as a major aspect of his endeavors to curb immigration.

The White House had said in mid-February that the two presidents were working on arranging a meeting.

But, The Washington Post, which first reported cancellation of the provisional meeting, said the two nations consented to cancel it after an irritable phone call finished in an impasse over the border barrier.

The telephone call occurred last Tuesday.

Refering to US and Mexican authorities, the Post said Trump "would not consent to openly assert Mexico's position that it would not finance development of a fringe divider that the Mexican people widely consider offensive."

Pena Nieto's visit had been considered for February or March, the Post stated, however the Mexican leader needed to avoid public embarrassment.

Building the fringe divider was an essential promise of the 2016 presidential battle by Trump, who says the obstruction is fundamental for his nation's security.

Gotten some information about the reports, a Mexican presidential source told AFP there would be no remark.

"There's nothing additional to the last Tuesday statement," the source said, alluding to remarks after the telephone call.

The two nations said at the time that they concurred in their call to boost cooperation on security, exchange and relocation.

Notwithstanding contradiction over the divider, Trump's assaults on Mexican outsiders and dangers to scrap the North American Free Trade Agreement have stressed relations between the neighbors.

The leaders did met once, on the sidelines of the G20 summit of significant economies in Hamburg, Germany, last July.

Mexico goes to the polls this July as Pena Nieto approaches the end of his term, with his Institutional Revolutionary Party profoundly disliked.
