Congress President Rahul Gandhi courts arrest

New Delhi, Oct 26 Congress President Rahul Gandhi Friday courted arrest after staging a protest outside the CBI headquarters here against the move to strip CBI Director Alok Verma of his powers and send him on leave.

Prior addressing to the gathering Gandhi assaulted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue.

He also blamed him of destroying foundations including the CBI, the Election Commission and the Enforcement Directorate.

Senior Congress pioneers, including Ashok Gehlot, Ahmed Patel, Motilal Vora, Veerappa Moily and Anand Sharma, participated in the walk that finished in an exhibit in front of the CBI headquarters.

Loktantrik Janata Dal leader Sharad Yadav, CPI leader D Raja and TMC's Nadimul Haque joined the protest.

The Congress' protest in the national capital were replicated in different parts of the nation.

State Congress leaders led shows in their regions against what the Congress portrayed as the "illicit, unlawful and ill-conceived expulsion of the CBI director by the Modi-Shah duo".

The apex court said former Supreme Court judge A K Patnaik will oversee a CVC investigation into the claims against Verma and the report must be put before it within two weeks.

It directed that between time CBI boss M Nageswara Rao will not take any major policy decisions. Decisions taken by him since October 23 till date will not be implemented, it said.

All decisions taken by Rao shall be placed before the apex court in a sealed cover.
