World Bank to support Bangladesh to oversee Rohingya crisis

Dhaka, July 2 The World Bank has guaranteed support to the Bangladesh government in managing the Rohingya crisis.

This statement was made by the World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim amid a gathering with Finance Minister AMA Muhith at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Sunday.

Jim lauded Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheik Hasina for her authority quality.

"This year, we gave a lending to Bangladesh of over US$3 billion, which is the second biggest among the nations on the planet where we finance. It is also a very clear indication of the confidence that we have toward the path that the legislature and nation is heading," The Dhaka Tribune cited the World Bank president as saying.

"We the UN secretary general and Kim] are here to offer our thanks to the people of Bangladesh and government for receiving so many refugees in a way that has been peaceful and humane," he said.

He also said they will visit the exile camps in Cox's Bazar as they are to a great degree worried about the circumstance of the Rohingyas.

Rohingyas are a Muslim minority ethnic group in Myanmar and are considered as illegal migrants.

More than 700,000 Rohingya refugees are mulling in crowded and flood-prone Bangladeshi refugee camps. They fled a ruthless Myanmar military campaign launched in August a year ago.
