New Delhi, July 16 Congress President Rahul Gandhi today wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking him to guarantee the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in the Monsoon Session of Parliament, beginning July 18.
In his letter to the prime minister, Gandhi offered his party's unconditional help to the bill and said the time has come for a change, and for women to assume their rightful place in state legislatures and Parliament.
The Congress chief also urged Modi to guarantee that the bill gets passed in this session itself with the goal that ladies can take part "more genuinely" in the state races not long from now and in the Lok Sabha polls next year.
"Mr Prime Minister, in a significant number of your open mobilizes you have talked about your enthusiasm for engaging ladies and including them all the more definitively out in the open life.
"What better way to demonstrate your promise to the reason for ladies, than by offering your unconditional support to the section of the Women's Reservation Bill? What's more, what better time, than the up and coming session of Parliament? Any further delay will make it impossible to implement before the next general elections," Gandhi kept in touch with Modi.
He said the Women's Reservation Bill, which was passed by the Rajya Sabha on March 9, 2010, has been stalled on one pretext or the other in the Lok Sabha, for more than eight years now.
From that point forward, while the Congress has been steady in its duty to the bill, the BJP seems to have had qualms, despite the fact that this was one of its key promises in its 2014 manifesto, Gandhi said.
"On the issue of enabling our ladies, let us stand together, rise above party politics and send India a message that we believe the time for change has come. Ladies must take their legitimate position in our state legislatures and in Parliament, where they are at present abysmally represented," he wrote to the prime minister.
"For the doubters in your gathering who restrict the section of this transformational (proposed) legislation, I would value you pointing out to them that our country's experience with governance at the Panchayat and Municipal levels, has clearly shown that women in leadership positions are more probable, than their male partners, to take choices that further the reason for a comprehensive and just society; which is the reason this bill can possibly change administration in India," the Congress president said.
Given that fact that the BJP and its partners have a larger part in the Lok Sabha, the Congress pioneer said what is required for this milestone bill to end up a the truth is the PM's help.
"I am certain, it won't be withheld," he said.
In a tweet, Gandhi stated, "Our PM says he's a crusader for ladies' empowerment? Time for him to rise above party politics, walk-his-talk and have the Women's Reservation Bill passed by Parliament. The Congress offers him its unconditional help (sic)."
The Congress president also claimed that his party has collected over 3.2 million marks of Indian men and women in support of the bill and said that he was presenting the same to him while looking for the prime minister's support.
