इस अवसर पर केंद्रीय मंत्री नितिन गडकरी, गुजरात के मुख्यमंत्री विजय रूपानी उपस्थित थे।

नर्मदा नदी पर बांध को भाजपा नेताओं द्वारा 'गुजरात की जीवन रेखा' के रूप में वर्णित किया गया है।

बांध का आधार पत्थर 5 अप्रैल 1961 को देश के पहले प्रधान मंत्री, जवाहरलाल नेहरू द्वारा रखे गए थे।

Kevadia (Gujarat), Sep 17 Prime Minister Narendra Modi today committed to the country the Sardar Sarovar Dam, very nearly 56 years after its establishment stone was laid.

Modi, who turned 67 today, disclosed the plaque devoting the dam to the country, after performing a puja at the site here in the Narmada district.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani were among the dignitaries present on the occasion.

The dam on the river Narmada has been depicted as 'Gujarat's life saver' by the BJP pioneers.

The foundation stone of the dam was laid on April 5, 1961 by the nation's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.


Be that as it may, it took 56 years to finally complete its development because of court cases and protests by the affected villagers.

Modi's visit, which has added significance as assembly elections are expected in Gujarat by the year-end, is the second in under seven days after he facilitated Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the state and launched the bullet train project.
