New Delhi, Apr 17 State governments are with the Centre on the issue of recalling the Supreme Court arrange supposedly weakening the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, home service authorities said.
The comments came in the wake of reports that some state governments have already directed their police to strictly execute the March 20 apex court order, which has upset Dalits groups leading to protests.
"The Centre has made abundantly clear that there should be no dilution of the SC/ST Act. It has filed a review petition of in the Supreme Court for recall of its order. As far as states are concerned, they are also on board. They are in touch with the Centre and a large number of them are making strides. Some have effectively reported that they will connect with the Centre," a service official said.
There were reports that some state governments have issued formal requests, training police chiefs to strictly implement the Supreme Court arrange that precludes capture under the SC/ST Act without sanction.
Be that as it may, a few states said they would record petitions in the Supreme Court testing its request altering the SC/ST Act, another authority said.
Chhattisgarh has announced its intention to challenge the apex court arrange while Kerala has already filed a review petition.
