Delhi government gives Rs 10 lakh compensation to family: Manual scavenger passing

New Delhi, Sep 18 Delhi Social Welfare Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam on Tuesday announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the kin of the manual scavenger who passed on while cleaning a sewer pit in Delhi's Dabri on September 14.

Gautam visited the family of the deceased here. He said that the Delhi government will guarantee that no more deaths take place due to manual scavenging.

"This is an extremely shocking incident and we will guarantee that a pay of 10 lakh rupees is given to the deceased's family at the earliest. The government has totally banned manual searching and it is prohibited to get inside any sewer or septic tank. The Delhi Jal Board has placed huge hoardings and given large advertisements in newspapers to create awareness in this regard," he said.

"If there is a problem in a septic tank, PWD or Jal Board must be contacted. If any contractor worker conveys somebody then they should guarantee all security measures. People have been sharpened that on the off chance that somebody powerfully sends a specialist into such condition and a deadly mishap occurs, at that point a case under IPC's Section 304 would be enrolled against the temporary worker", he included.

Elaborating further on the means being taken by the Delhi government to put a conclusion to the act of manual searching, the priest additionally acknowledged that it is turning into a test to stop such episodes.

He stated, "It is sad that government can just formulate rules and regulations and give compensation. We can get cases registered and guarantee legal action in the accidents but the saddest part is that when in private properties or in different sewers, people are conveyed without the assent of the administration, such mischances occur. It is turning into a test to stop such occurrences. We have assembled a conference of a checking advisory group to be led by the Chief Minister and have welcomed all partners to it".

He also claimed that soon sewer cleaning will be totally automated and included, "We are attempting that such occurrences must stop. We have also approved tender for 200 vehicles and those machines will arrive in a few months. We are dealing with finish mechanisation of sewer cleaning."
