No respite from intense icy conditions in Kashmir; Kargil town coldest

Srinagar, Jan 16 There was no respite from intense icy conditions in the Kashmir division as Kargil town in the Ladakh area kept on being the coldest place in the state registering a low of short 19 degrees Celsius.

In the adjacent Leh town, the mercury settled at a low of short 13.8 degrees Celsius, down almost three degrees from less 10.9 degrees Celsius daily prior, an authority of the Meteorological Department said.

Kargil town in the Ladakh area was the coldest place in the state as the base temperature the previous evening settled at short 19 degrees Celsius, one degrees up from the earlier night's less 20 degrees Celsius, the authority said.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a base temperature of short 4.9 degrees Celsius the previous evening, around 1.6 degrees Celsius from less 3.3 degrees Celsius the earlier night, he said.

The night temperature in Qazigund, in south Kashmir, settled at a low of short 5.2 degrees Celsius, down from yesterday's less 4.2 degrees Celsius.

The neighboring Kokernag town saw mercury fall marginally to settle at a low of short 1.8 degrees Celsius the previous evening, same as the earlier night, the authority said.

He said Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a low of short 5.4 degrees Celsius, down from less 4.8 degrees Celsius the earlier night.

The authority said the night temperature in Pahalgam - the renowned wellbeing resort which likewise fills in as one of the base camps for the yearly Amarnath Yatra - diminished from the low of less 5.6 degrees Celsius the earlier night to settle at the low of short 6.6 degrees Celsius the previous evening.

Gulmarg - the well known ski-resort in north Kashmir recorded the base temperature of short 6 degrees Celsius up from less 6.4 degrees Celsius yesterday.

The MeT office has gauge detached rains or snow throughout the following 24 hours however the climate is required to stay dry over whatever remains of the week, showing that there would be no break from the icy wave conditions.

Kashmir is right now under the hold of 'Chillai-Kalan', a 40-day harshest time of winter, when the odds of snowfall are most successive and greatest and the temperature drops significantly.

It closes on January 31, yet the chilly wave proceeds even after that in the valley.
