Prashant Bhushan: One had to confront CJI for "abusing" his forces

New Delhi, Jan 12 Supreme Court legal advisor Prashant Bhushan said on Friday that Chief Justice of India Dipak Mishra was "abusing his forces" after four sitting Supreme Court judges held a question and answer session - a first of its kind in India - in such manner.

"Someone needed to stand up to the circumstance, where the CJ(I) is explicitly abusing his forces, consequently the unprecedented step," Prashant told.

"It is surely an intense improvement which has thrown an immense shadow on the chief justice," Bhushan added.

Prior in the day, Supreme Court judges Justices J Chelameswar, Madan B Lokur, Ranjan Gogoi and Kurian Joseph, in a media briefing here, said they have released an obligation to the country by issuing an appeal to the country to save the institution (Supreme Court).

They made a reference to a letter that they had written to the CJI in which they featured the erosion and trade off occurring inside the establishment of the legal and especially within the portals of the Supreme Court.

"We owe a duty to the establishment and the country. Our endeavors have flopped in persuading the CJI to take steps to protect the institution," Justice Chelameswar said while tending to the media on the lawns of his official home here.
