Prime Minister Modi to inaugurate Mary Kom's foundation in presence of Vijender, Sushil

New Delhi, Mar 12 Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 'Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation' in Imphal on March 16 and present in the long-awaited occasion will be Olympic medallists - boxer Vijender Kumar and wrestler Sushil Kumar.

Nestled at the foot of Langol hills in Manipur's Imphal West district, Mary Kom's Boxing Academy, spread crosswise over 3.3 sections of land, is around 10 km from the focal point of state capital Imphal. It at present houses 45 youthful boxers, including 20 girls, at the three-story building.

The land was allotted by the Manipur government in 2013, and the foundation's development was supported by National Sports Development Fund (NSDF).

"The foundation is grateful to both central and state government for establishment of these games sports after numerous times of battle since its beginning in 2006," it said in an official statement.

"The foundation expresses their gratitude to PMO for making (it) to the occasion and formally handover the buildings to the establishment for advancement of boxing sports."

A five-time world and Asian champion, Mary Kom is also the nation's only woman boxer with an Olympic medal (a bronze won in London 2012 Games).

The 35-year-old was dedicated 'Magnificent Mary' by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) a couple of years back for her stellar profession, which likewise incorporates an Asian Games gold medal.
