Mike Pompeo arrives in Pakistan

Islamabad, Sep 5 United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday arrived base in Islamabad to hold talks on different issues with the Pakistani leadership.

Pompeo, who is being joined by US military chief General Joseph Dunford, is expected to hold meetings with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, The Dawn reported.

Pompeo and Dunford contacted down at Nur Khan Airbase in Islamabad after 1 pm (nearby time). This is the main abnormal state visit by Pompeo to Pakistan after the new government assumed control a month ago.

On being quizzed about his visit to Pakistan, the US Secretary of State told media people going with him that the trip was being endeavored to reset the bilateral ties between Washington and Islamabad. He recognized that there are a lot of difficulties to be handled, and communicated trust that the new Pakistan government would resolve the irritants affecting the relations of both countries.

Pompeo elucidated: "I wanted to get out there at the beginning of his time in an effort to reset the relationship between the two nations. We have worked intimately with the Pakistanis in my role as CIA director. Our teams have been working for quite a while. There are heaps of difficulties between our two countries without a doubt, yet we're confident that with the new administration that we can locate a shared view and start to chip away at a portion of our mutual issues together. They have expressed good-faith intention to do so."

"Chairman Dunford and I are taking off there together to have those discussions. We'll also meet with General Bajwa, who I've met with various occasions, and my partner, Foreign Minister Qureshi. So we'll have three chances to walk through the multifaceted nature that is this relationship and ideally start to gain some ground so we can return to an arrangement of basic understandings. Pompeo is slated to land in India later in the day to participate in the inaugural India-US 2+2 dialogue, which would take place on Thursday.
