Supreme Court maintained value of equity, says Shashi Tharoor on Section 377 verdict

New Delhi, Sep 6 Welcoming the Supreme Court judgement on Section 377, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that the request has maintained the estimations of equity.

He further expressed that the matte was not an issue of sex but of constitutional freedom.

Tharoor stated, "First of all, I welcome the Supreme Court's judgement and I think it is a correct judgement to make. I feel particularly happy with the facts of the court as I myself advocated and raised the issue a few years ago. Properly stated, it isn't the issue of sex however the issue of constitutional freedom."

"The Supreme Court has maintained the estimations of uniformity which should apply to all networks of our nation," he included.

Meanwhile, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Brinda Karat likewise respected the summit court's request on Section 377 by naming it as `historic`.

"It is a historic day. It is a memorable judgement and triumph for every one of those residents of India who have endured. It has been struck down and Chief Justice of India has himself maintained the privileges of every one of those having a place with LGBTI people group," Karat told.

"CPI-M congratulates all those who fought this battle. They have taken the battle for vote based system further. We respect this judgement," she included.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, then again, declined to remark on the decision saying that the issue is of dubious nature and his stand would be chosen by the party's take.

Following quite a while of considerations, the Supreme Court struck down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which criminalized homosexuality. A five-judge established seat, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and involving Justices D Y Chandrachud, Rohinton Fali Nariman, AM Khanwilkar and Indu Malhotra, gave the decision on a cluster of petitions recorded to scrap the law.
