Kerala rains: Several evacuated from Cheruthoni town

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 10 Scores of people living in Cheruthoni town were evacuated from their homes on Friday as heavy rains triggered flash flooding in the district.

Idukki district collector Jeevan Kumar guaranteed that they have securely moved individuals to the help camps set up in Munnar and a few other adjacent regions where the water level is nearly low.

"Our rescue team are taking all the fundamental measures keeping in order to combat with the current situation. We have helped the people in shifting to relief camps set up in Munnar as the water level rose in Cherurhoni because of overwhelming deluge. The state is relied upon to get significantly heavier precipitation for the next couple of days," he said.

Not just that, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) also opened all the five shutters of the Cheruthony dam so as to release the excess inflow of the water kept in the catchment territories of the reservoir from the recent days.

The floodgates were opened to increase the water flow into the Periyar river to 125 cuses (1, 25,000 liters/second).
