Mayawati: SC/ST Atrocity Law an appeasement, government not doing much for Dalits

Lucknow, Aug 7 Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Tuesday expresssed anger against the Narendra Modi-led government, saying they are not making enough efforts for upliftment of Dalits in the public eye.

Addressing media, the previous Uttar Pradesh chief minister said that the retrogressive classes of the nation are not getting the advantages of reservation in training establishments and employments. She additionally censured the Dalit ministers who owe allegiance to the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

"In the course of the most recent four years, the central government has done nothing to help Dalits and other in reverse classes. Indeed, even in government jobs and education institutions, people are not getting benefits and are highly dissatisfied with the working of this government," said Mayawati.

Further attacking the Narendra Modi government, Mayawati blamed the Center for assuaging the backward classes through a portion of its recent moves.

"As the elections are nearing in several states, the BJP is under huge weight. Keeping in mind the end goal to win the command in the up and coming surveys, the Center reestablished the SC/ST Atrocity Law and has taken up the issue of making National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) an autonomus body yesterday," she said.

The Lok Sabha, on Monday, collectively passed the law with provisons for stricter guildines, similar to no safeguard for anybody blamed for abominations on SC/STs and non prerequisite of a request for enlisting a criminal case and starting a test.

The BSP chief also asked the government to proclaim a law that can give reservation to the upper caste poor on the basis of economic conditions.

"I ask for the center to give at least 18 percent or more reservation to upper caste poor for their development. For as long as couple of decades, the BSP has been requesting that alongside high society poor, minority religious gatherings like Muslims ought to also be brought under the reservation," said Mayawati.
