Chennai, Aug 28 The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) general chamber chose M K Stalin as the gathering president here on Tuesday.
"As nobody else filed nomination, Mr. Stalin is chosen for the post," said party general secretary K. Anbazhagan.
Meanwhile, principal secretary Duraimurugan was named as the new treasurer of the party.
A total of 1907 party leaders and workers had either proposed or favored Stalin's name for the post. Duraimurugan collected help of 252 people.
Stalin had recorded his nomination papers on Sunday. He was appointed'working president' of the party in 2017.
This elevation comes when ousted party leader and Karunanidhi's elder child, MK Alagiri, asserted that the loyal supporters of his dad are behind him.
Alagiri, who was ousted by the previous party president Karunanidhi in 2014 for libelous assaults on senior members of the association and carrying out anti-party activities, had mixed a war of progression by naming Stalin's initiative as inadequate.
During the meeting, two minutes of quietness was observed for those who died during Kerala floods and Thoothukudi protest.
A compensation of Rs 2 lakh was announced for the family of the 248 people who passed due to shock after hearing the news of Karunanidhi's death on August 7.
During the meeting, DMK supporters also urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government to after death give Bharat Ratna to Karunanidhi.
