गौरी, 55, एक कन्नड़ साप्ताहिक गौरी लंकेष पेट्रीके के संपादक थीं। उन्हें एक स्वतंत्र और मुखर पत्रकार और कार्यकर्ता के रूप में व्यापक रूप से माना जाता था, और कर्नाटक में कट्टरपंथी हिंदू समूहों के एक गंभीर आलोचक थीं।

"महत्वपूर्ण पत्रकारों और कार्यकर्ताओं ने हाल के वर्षों में भारत भर में खतरों और हमलों का सामना किया है। राज्य सरकारों को उन लोगों की रक्षा करने के लिए कार्य करना चाहिए जिनके असंतोष की आवाज को चुप किया जा रहा है," बसु ने कहा।

समिति की रक्षा पत्रकारों ने कहा है कि 1992 में भारत में पत्रकारों के 27 मामलों में से किसी के भी "उनके काम के लिए हत्या कर दी गई" में कोई दृढ़ निश्चय नहीं हुआ है।




New Delhi, Sep 6 The killing of writer Gauri Lankesh by shooters outside her living residence in Bengaluru "raises alarm" about the state of freedom of expression in the nation, Amnesty International India said today.

Gauri, who was known for her strident anti-establishment views and writings against Hindu fundamentalists, was never afraid of talking truth to power, the rights body said.

"Her death must be altogether explored and the perpetrators brought to justice. The police must explore whether she was killed in light of her news journalism," Asmita Basu, Programs Director at Amnesty International India, said.

Gauri, 55, was the editor of Gauri Lankesh Patrike, a Kannada week by week. She was generally viewed as an autonomous and outspoken journalist and activist, and a furious commentator of hardline Hindu groups in Karnataka.

"Basic journalists and activists have progressively confronted dangers and attacks across over India as of late. State governments must act to ensure those whose voices of dispute are being hushed," Basu said.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has said that there have been no conviction in any of 27 cases of journalists "killed for their work" in India since 1992, the statement said.
