PM Modi: Slaughtering people in name of cow security not worthy

Ahmedabad, Jun 29 Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said killing of people in the name of cow security is not satisfactory, comments that come in the midst of attacks by cow vigilantes and a flood of dissents.

Conveying a discourse to mark the centenary of the Sabarmati ashram here and 150th birth anniversary of Shrimad Rajchandraji, a guru to Mahatma Gandhi, Modi said unleashing brutality against others conflicted with the goals of the Father of the Nation.

"killing people in the name of 'gau bhakti' is not satisfactory. This is not something Mahatma Gandhi would affirm," he said.

"How about we all cooperate. We should make the India of Mahatma Gandhi's fantasies. How about we make an India our opportunity contenders would be pleased with," the leader said.

"No individual in this country has the privilege to take the law in his or her own particular hands," he said.

The Prime Minister's comments come against the background of growing incidents of cow vigilantism. A Muslim youth was a week ago slaughtered on board a Mathura-bound train by people who provoked his family and over and again called them "against nationals" and "hamburger eaters".

"Viciousness never has and never will solve any issue.

As a general public, there is no place for violance," Modi said.

A large number of people the nation over had yesterday rioted in a nationals' challenge named 'Not in My Name' against the current episodes of crowd killings.

Holding bulletins that read: "End the Silence", "No Place for Islamophobia" and "Shed Hate not Blood" among others, the dissidents had said they had assembled to convey a message that there is a need to join for a cause.
